Ninguru Napurrula was born in 1938 at Watulka in Western Australia near Kiwiirrkura. She moved to the Papunya community in Central Australia in the early days of resettlement with her family, where she commenced painting in 1972.

Her husband was Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi a recognised artist and highly respected Pintupi elder. Ninguru is known for her strong, dynamic paintings which are created by using many layers of paint in powerful traditional designs. Her work features the mythological journeys of her ancestors the 'Tingari' people a group of men and women who travelled the desert interior of Australia in the Dreamtime or creation era as we know it today. They created the landscape, plants and animals as they travelled great distances singing the country and creating sacred sites that are still recognised and celebrated by her people to this day.Ningurus art reflects the sacred rock holes and her strong relationship with the iconography of the land that has been used for many thousands of years and is still depicted in her paintings designs and colours.

A painting in black and white by Ninguru was chosen to be super imposed on the ceiling of the 'Musee du Quai Branly' in Paris, France where she is recognised as one of the greatest Australian Artists of her time.

Ningurus paintings are highly sought after by private and public collectors world wide. Enquiries regarding the paintings displayed on this web site are welcome.
