Dreamtime Gallery

Alice Springs

The Original Dreamtime Art Gallery opened in 1988 in Alice Springs NT Central Australia.

It was the first Aboriginal Gallery to open on Todd Mall, the main tourist precinct in the town of Alice Springs.Setting a precedent for the many Aboriginal Galleries that now operate in this area today.

From 1988 to 2004 the 'Original Dreamtime Art Gallery' showcased the work of many renowned Aboriginal artists from the central desert settlements of Papunya, Hermannsburg, Yuendumu,Utopia and Ernabella in SA. Papunya legends Billy Stockman Tjapaltjari,Clifford Possom Tjapaltjari, Dinny Nolan Tjampatjinpa and Long Jack Phillipus Tjakamara were constant visitors to the 'Original Dreamtime Gallery' for many years.Rosemary enjoyed a strong relationship with Wenten Rubuntja Tjabanati and his family, the Central Australian Arrente Aboriginal leader and recognised watercolour and traditional painting artist.

Northern Top End Aboriginal Art and Far North Qld Aboriginal Artists works also featured strongly on the Gallery walls.Totems,Spirit Poles, Bark Paintings ,Carvings, and Weavings carefully selected by Rosemary on many buying trips to Arnhemland and Darwin. These trips were often undertaken in a two seater plane flying across crocodile infested marshland and rainforests to the remote Aboriginal communities of Oenpelli, Maningrida and Ramingining. The pilot often landing the plane on dirt run ways as kangaroos scattered into the surrounding bushland.

The Northern Aboriginal people welcomed these visits, as at that time the artists found it difficult to market their art and craft due to the remoteness of their communities.

Many trusted friendships were also struck with recognised Northern artists such as Willie Gudabi - Custodian of the Allawa Country ,Ginger Riley, Sambo Barrabara from Ngukurr in Arnhemland and with Gerry Blitner an Artist and Carver, who was head of the Northern Aboriginal Land council for many years.Rosemary also established a strong working relationship with his nephew Walter and the Blitner family near Katherine NT.

These strong relationships are still continued with many Aboriginal Artists to this day.Painted Country Gallery's director welcomes both old and new clients to this web site and ensures that we will continue to deliver the excellent standard of Aboriginal Art and exemplary service that has been provided over the past two decades to our Australian and International customers.
