Artists - Donald & Kenny Blitner
Mara
Carved 1988
Collectors Piece

'Baru the Ancestral Crocodile' is represented in Ancient Etchings on caves in Northern Australia. The Crocodile Dreaming is sacred and many stories are told about this reptile. Crocodiles are feared and worshipped at Aboriginal Ceremonies where the Didgeridoo is used to portray the sounds of 'Baru the great Crocodile warrior'.

The Crocodile represents power and strength -'plenty dangerous, give him respect'. A heavy rainforest hardwood is used for this carving, surface designs have been carved into the timber with a sharp instrument. The paint is natural oche ground to a powder and used with a fixative in traditional colours.

The pattern relates to clan designs or aspects of the Crocodile myth. Enquiries regarding this magnificent carving are welcome.
