The artist Jeannie Petyarre was born in 1957 at an outstation near Utopia 250 kl North East of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory Australia. Jeannie is from a group of women artists that gained fame in the late 1980,s for their dramatic batik images on silk ,her designs gradually evolved onto canvas telling the dreamtime stories of her ancestors in a more detailed form.

Jeannies main stories are Mountain Devil, Womens Ceremony Bush Yams and Bush Medicine dreaming.
Aboriginal Art stems from painting stories on the sand for women's ceremonies to instruct and reinforce the ancient stories of creation to the children and young girls before marriage.

Jeannie Petyarres work is noted for its linear style and this is particularly evident in her ‘Bush Yam and Medicine Dreaming’ where her bold patterning and strong attention to detail creates the effect of coloured leaves that is the base story for these dreamings.

The ranges and desert country of Central Australia are the home of the artist. Jeannie is from the Allawarre / Anmatyerre people of Utopia.

Jeannie is the sister of other major aboriginal artists Gloria and Kathleen Petyarre,Ada Bird and Nancy Petyarre. Her aunt was the late Emily Kngwarreye the iconic master of aboriginal art.

Painted Country Gallery,s director has lived and worked closely with the Utopia group of artists for over 20 years. Enquiries regarding their future works are welcome.
