Brogus Tjapangardi

Luritja born circa: 1949
Papunya Central Australia

Born at Haasts Bluff on 10th November 1949. The name Brogus by which he is usually known was also his grandfather’s. Brogus began painting in 1982 after watching older artists like Clifford Possom (who taught him to carve long before he began painting), Billy Stockman, Tim Leura and Dinny Nolan as a young man growing up at Papunya, the Aboriginal community in central Australia where contemporary Aboriginal painting originated. He later worked at Papunya school, giving “manual training” classes in the carving of snakes and goannas. In recent years, he has lived for long periods of time in Alice Springs and Papunya and lately at Hermansberg, where his wife’s family lives.

Brogus’s father’s country lays around the regions of Kunatjarrayi and Pikilyi, his mother’s country situated at Illpilli, Kalimpinpa and Tjikarri. His paintings depict the witchetty grub and water snake dreamings pertaining to the area of Kunajarrayi. Parrot, rock wallaby and women’s dreaming stories are also from these areas.

Commissions include National Galleries across Australia including major works at the Queensland art gallery. Ancient Earth’s director Rosemary Penrose has worked closely with Brogus Tjapangardi for 20 over years. Enquiries regarding his art are welcome.
