Ivan Panka

Ivan Panka grew up at Hermannsburg a Lutheran Mission settlement west of Alice Springs in Central Australia. He went to school there and learnt the basic fundamentals of painting. He was initiated into manhood according to Western Arrente Aboriginal tribal law and then went to live in Alice Springs with his family the Namatjira,s. It was there that Ivan was inspired by the work of his uncle, iconic water colour artist Albert Namatjira. Alberts son Maurice Namatjira also painted and was instrumental in instructing Ivan to paint. As he quoted ëPainting is the only job he ever had, as he had no other work.

Ivan,s watercolours are bold, reflecting the vivid changes of colour that are so typical of the desert and ranges of the Arrente people west of Alice Springs.

Painted Country,s director remembers Ivan as a tall quietly spoken man, gentle and well mannered he lived for his art and enjoyed his visits to her gallery in Alice Springs from 1986 to 1999, when he sadly passed away.

Ivan Pankas water colour art is found in private and corporate collections world wide.
