Desmond Ebataringa

Desmond Ebataringa's family came from the Lutheran mission at Hermannsburg, West of Alice Springs, Central Australia. His traditional area was the MacDonnell Ranges, Areyonga and the James Range. Desmond grew up at Hermannsburg and went to school in Alice Springs. His father was Walter Ebataringa Albert Namatjira’s nephew. Namatjira taught him to paint, and then his father taught his mother, Cordelia. Desmond was only a child when he first saw Albert Namatjira painting while living in Alice Springs. As he watched Albert and his parents painting he used to watch and learned from them.

Desmond painted the country he saw when he walked in the bush, That country was important to him when he painted his water colours.

When Desmond painted country, he thought about the dreaming for that country. He thought about his grandfathers and grandmothers, who used to live there and how they used to sing and teach about the dreaming.

His parents taught him to paint like that, thinking about the country.

Painted Country Gallery,s director worked closely with Desmond Ebataringa from 1986 to 2004 .Exhibiting and promoting his work from her Galleries in Alice Springs NT, Cairns Qld and Hahndorf SA.
