Clem Abbott

Clem Abbott 1939 - 1989 Western Arrente ( Mpetyane ) He was born at Hermannsburg and went to school at the Lutheran mission.

Clem was the son of Arthur and Katie Abbott. He was first introduced to art by drawing with coloured pencils. He watched Albert Namatjira and his sons painting and from there he learnt more. Eventually he learnt to use a brush and paint and became a very accomplished artist.

Clem travelled overseas and around Australia demonstrating his painting. His art has been used on post cards and shown in Art Galleries in Alice Springs and Darwin.

Painting country was important for his culture and the sites of Ormiston Gorge, Mount Sonder ,Glen Helen Gorge and Hermannsburg are all featured in his art.

Clem sadly passed away in Alice Springs hospital in 1989 but his name lives on in his art.
