Woodinda

Tribe: Jirrbalngan
Language: Jirrbal
Name: Woodinda
Skin Name: Gurrgila

Woodinda's paintings depict the traditional stories of the Jirrbalngan people of the Rainforest in the Far North Qld area of Australia. He often paints under his given name, Woodinda and also under his skin name, Gurrgila.

These stories have been passed down over thousands of generations where the laws and ceremonies are held in place to keep law and order in the clan. The methods of hunting, gathering and the processing and distribution of food amongst clan members are also inherited as they are an integral part of the hierarchy of the group.

Yarracali, Woodinda's grandmother who is in her late eighties, teaches and passes down many of the stories that she grew up with. Some of these stories are appropriate for painting and those that are not, are always kept at close quarters within the clan. Woodinda is grateful and honoured to learn the stories and cultural ways of his people as he passes them down to his own four sons.
Woodinda and Yirrikali hope you enjoy their art and traditional culture as much as they do.
