Tommy Crows painting designs show the desert sand dune country at night near Ayers Rock in Central Australia. The men will hunt for kangaroos and emus with boomerangs and spears as they make their way across the desert sand dunes between waterholes.

These paintings tell the dreamtime story of the sacred animals and birds of Australia. Malu the red kangaroo and the emu bird. Aboriginal people inherit the spirit of animals, birds and plants at birth when they are conceived on the ancient dreaming tracks where the kangaroo and emu ancestral beings travelled the land in the dreamtime.

The kangaroo is valued for itís meat and skin. A ceremony is held after a successful hunt and this is a time for celebration. The aboriginal men paint their bodies with ochre paints and goanna fat for the corroboree they make belts from human hair trimmed with emu feathers which are also painted with ochres.

Emus are large flightless birds that inhabit the desert regions of Australia. They have very long legs which enables it to run vast distances at a time.

The meat, oil, feathers and skin of the emu are a valuable commodity to Aboriginal people.

Aboriginal boys are taught the skill of hunting in preparation for their initiation into manhood. The aboriginal men depicted in the paintings are holding a ceremony as they dance around the camp fire after sunset.

The background colours in these paintings relate to the red sand dunes, gum trees and spinafex grasses that are such a strong part of the Central Australian desert landscape. Flocks of Galahs settle in the tree tops at night. The scene is tranquil and peaceful as the camp fire smoke wends its way into the night sky.
